I have a little crow to eat. Back in January I discussed the Dior Couture show, and though a beautiful show, I wrote that I didn't really find it innovative or fresh. After seeing the Dior Pret a Porter Fall/Winter 2012 collection at a benefit for the Melanoma Research Alliance, ad hoc designer Bill Gaytten put together a young, creative collection.
The work showed that there is a way to put sophistication and flirtation together. Loved the varied lengths of the pieces, especially the shorter ones - not your typical Dior. The play on the shape of The New Look made everything lighter and more fun. Begone 50s housewives!
50s added with 80s turns new millennium |
Great classic blazer with a 'shorter the better' skirt |
Super long and lean |
Fur and leather vest with turtleneck |
The leather pieces were exquisite and thin as paper. And the ankle boots added a bit of an edge the brand needs and looks good in. It's what life is all about, balancing the hard with the soft, the racy with the sweet, and the past with the future.
Raf Simons, creative director at Jil Sander, will replace John Galliano as "artistic director" (which I am loving the title as it gives fashion design the well desired title of artist) in July 2012 for the Couture collection. I just read his quote while writing this post: "My aim is a very modern Dior, but at the end of the day, I also look back," Seems like we are on the same page. Can't wait to see what he does for Dior...

Raf Simons' design has always been about range, both in time and experience. This collection shows a new sense of focus and the look comes together as never before.
Beautiful, wearable clothes for the self-confident woman, or she who wants others to think she is.
